📝 Our Review

This is the most faithful biblical adaptation ever put on film — literally, since it uses the complete text of John's Gospel (Good News Bible translation) as its screenplay. Henry Ian Cusick (who would later become famous as Desmond on Lost) plays Jesus with a human warmth that makes a three-hour scripture reading feel like a compelling drama. That's no small achievement. Christopher Plummer narrates with the gravitas you'd expect, and his voice gives weight to John's theological passages that could otherwise feel abstract on screen. The production was filmed in Spain, and the Mediterranean landscapes provide a convincing first-century backdrop. Director Philip Saville makes smart visual choices — the raising of Lazarus scene is particularly well-staged. The film's limitation is also its strength: because it follows the text exactly, there's no dramatic restructuring or creative embellishment. For some viewers, that's the whole point. For others, it may feel like an illustrated audiobook. Best suited for Bible study groups and anyone who wants to see John's Gospel brought to life with fidelity and respect.
