📝 Our Review

Sandra Bullock won the Oscar for her portrayal of Leigh Anne Tuohy, and while the performance is bigger than life, it's also deeply entertaining. She plays a woman who doesn't take no for an answer from anyone — coaches, gang members, or her own husband (played with perfect comedic timing by Tim McGraw). Quinton Aaron brings a gentle physicality to Michael that makes you root for him immediately. The football scenes are surprisingly well-done for a drama, and the film captures the culture of Southern football with affection. Now, the controversy: Michael Oher himself has publicly stated the film exaggerated the family's role and made him look less intelligent than he is. That's a legitimate criticism worth acknowledging. The 'white savior' dynamics have also drawn fair scrutiny. Viewed purely as a film, it's well-crafted, emotionally effective, and genuinely funny in places. The Tuohy children, especially Jae Head as young SJ, steal scenes effortlessly. Whether the real story is more complicated than the film suggests — it almost certainly is — doesn't negate the film's entertainment value, but it does warrant a conversation afterward.
