📝 Our Review

AnnaSophia Robb is perfectly cast as Bethany Hamilton — she actually learned to surf for the role and performs many of her own wave scenes, which adds an authenticity that CGI couldn't replicate. The shark attack sequence is handled with restraint; it's scary enough to convey the trauma without being exploitative. Helen Hunt and Dennis Quaid as Bethany's parents bring A-list credibility and genuine warmth. Carrie Underwood, in her first film role as a youth leader, is... fine. Not terrible, not memorable, just present. The surfing cinematography is the film's visual highlight — shot on location in Hawaii, the ocean footage is stunning. Where the film excels is in not making Bethany's recovery a linear triumph. She struggles, she gets frustrated, she has moments of real doubt. Her trip to Thailand after the 2004 tsunami — where she helps children who've lost everything — is the film's emotional turning point and avoids feeling manipulative. The faith elements are woven naturally into the Hamilton family's life rather than inserted as separate 'message' scenes. A solid family film that happens to be about a real miracle.
