📝 Our Review

The Kendrick Brothers took a risk with Overcomer — it's smaller, more personal, and less obviously 'churchy' than their previous films. And it pays off. Alex Kendrick plays Coach John Harrison with a quiet frustration that feels authentic. He's a man whose identity is wrapped up in basketball, and when that's stripped away, he doesn't know who he is. That's a universal struggle, not just a Christian one. Aryn Wright-Thompson is a genuine find as Hannah, the blind cross-country runner. Her scenes are the film's emotional center, and the mystery of her identity (no spoilers) provides a narrative hook that keeps you watching. The cross-country racing scenes are shot with more cinematic flair than you'd expect. Priscilla Shirer returns in a supporting role and is solid as always. The film's central question — 'Who are you?' — is answered through faith without being preachy about it. The Kendricks have clearly grown as filmmakers; the dialogue is sharper, the performances more natural, and the spiritual message more woven into the story rather than bolted onto it.
