📝 Our Review

Created as a direct-to-video follow-up to The Prince of Egypt, Joseph: King of Dreams doesn't reach those heights but is still a solid animated biblical film in its own right. Ben Affleck voices Joseph with more warmth than you might expect, and the dream sequences are visually inventive — shifting between 2D and impressionistic art styles that reflect the surreal nature of prophetic visions. The film doesn't shy away from the darker elements of Joseph's story: the betrayal by his brothers, Potiphar's wife's false accusation, and the years of imprisonment. These moments give the story weight that would be easy to sanitize for a kids' film. The music (by Daniel Pelfrey) isn't quite on par with the Zimmer/Schwartz work in Prince of Egypt, but it's effective. The reconciliation scene between Joseph and his brothers is genuinely emotional. For families looking to introduce children to Old Testament stories, this is an excellent starting point — engaging enough for kids, respectful enough for parents.
