Where to Watch Young Washington: Streaming, Faith Themes and Age Guide
Young Washington (PG-13) now streams on Wonder Project inside Prime Video, with a 7-day free trial. Every legal way to watch, how the film handles Washington's faith, and age guidance for families.

Young Washington is streaming now, but not on a free service. Since October 1, 2026 the PG-13 film has been available in the US on Wonder Project, a subscription channel you add inside Prime Video. A regular Prime membership is not enough on its own. Wonder Project costs $8.99 a month or $89.99 a year after a 7-day free trial. The film is also on Angel for Angel Guild members, and you can rent or buy it digitally.
That 7-day trial is the only legal way to watch it for $0 right now. Below you'll find each option, what the film says (and doesn't say) about Washington's faith, the age guidance parents usually ask about, and some questions for talking it over afterwards. We checked prices and availability on October 27, 2026. Streaming deals change, so check the price on the Wonder Project page before you subscribe.
Where to watch Young Washington right now
- Wonder Project on Prime Video (US): included with a Wonder Project subscription. The official Wonder Project site lists $8.99 a month or $89.99 a year, with a 7-day free trial, ad-free and cancel any time. The film leads Wonder Project's new "Stories Worth Knowing" collection, according to the studio's October 1 announcement.
- Angel: streaming on angel.com for Angel Guild members since August 11, Forbes reported.
- Digital rental or purchase: the film went to premium video on demand in August, so you can rent or buy it from digital movie stores.
If you already pay for Prime Video, you'll see Young Washington in the app. But pressing play takes you to the Wonder Project sign-up, which is the "catch" Forbes wrote about.
Can you watch it for free legally?
Yes, but only for a short time. Start the Wonder Project 7-day trial, watch the film, and cancel before day 8 if you don't want to keep paying. While you're on the trial, Wonder Project also carries House of David and A Great Awakening, the series about George Whitefield and Benjamin Franklin. So you could plan a week of viewing around it.
Avoid the YouTube uploads that claim to be the "full movie". Angel's official YouTube channel has the trailer. A full upload from any other channel is pirated, and those uploads usually get taken down. If free viewing matters more than seeing this particular title, our guide to where to watch Christian movies free lists the services that are legal and free with ads.
What the film is about
Young Washington is directed by Jon Erwin, who also made Jesus Revolution and created House of David. It covers George Washington's life from about 1753 to 1755, years before the Revolution. Wikipedia's summary follows him as a 21-year-old militia officer carrying a British ultimatum into the Ohio Country, the deadly skirmish at Jumonville Glen, his surrender at Fort Necessity on July 3, 1754, and the disaster of Braddock's expedition at the Monongahela on July 9, 1755.
William Franklyn-Miller plays Washington. Mary-Louise Parker plays his mother, Mary Ball Washington, with Kelsey Grammer as Lord Fairfax, Ben Kingsley as Governor Robert Dinwiddie and Andy Serkis as General Edward Braddock. The film runs 120 minutes. It opened on July 3, 2026, for America's 250th anniversary, and was the No. 2 film at the US box office on July 4. It went on to earn about $47.1 million on a $20 million budget.
How the film handles Washington's faith
This is the main reason Christian families will be interested, and it's also where the film takes the most care. Writer Diederik Hoogstraten told ChurchLeaders that the story emphasises God's providence through conversations with Washington's mother and with a Native American warrior. He also said that while the main events and characters are historical, some dialogue and scenes were invented (JubileeCast summary, October 26).
The providence theme does come from Washington himself. Nine days after the Monongahela battle, he wrote to his brother John Augustine:
> "By the all powerful dispensatns of Providence, I have been protected beyond all human probability & expectation for I had 4 Bullets through my Coat, and two Horses shot under me yet although death was levelling my companions on every side of me, escaped unhurt."
The letter is dated July 18, 1755, and you can read the full transcription at the National Archives' Founders Online. The film's battle climax recreates those details. What the film can't tell you is exactly what Washington believed or said in private conversations. Those scenes are the screenwriters' interpretation, and it's worth saying so to older children watching with you.
So this isn't a Bible film or a conversion story. It's a war drama made by Christian filmmakers about courage, failure and humility, with the belief that God was at work in a young man who didn't yet know what he was being prepared for.
Is Young Washington OK for kids?
It's rated PG-13 for "sequences of strong war violence and some bloody images", according to Angel's Young Washington FAQ. The Angel Guild, the parent and viewer group that screens Angel releases, recommends it for ages 12 and up because of intense battle scenes and some language. The FAQ counts 2 uses of "hell", 3 of "damn" and 1 of "bastard". A subplot follows Washington's feelings for Sally Cary, who is engaged to his rival.
What to expect in practice:
- Ages 12+ and teens: a good fit, especially for students studying colonial history. The writer said fathers especially liked having a film they could watch with their sons.
- Ages 9 to 11: depends on the child. The Jumonville Glen and Monongahela scenes are chaotic and bloody, so it's best to watch first or skip through those battles.
- Under 9: probably not. A gentler choice for a family night is one of the picks in our faith movies for family night list.
For more teen-appropriate picks, see our Christian movies for teens guide.
What critics and audiences thought
The film split critics and audiences. Forbes reported a 59% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes against a 92% audience score. That 33-point gap is common for faith-friendly releases, where church and family audiences buy tickets in groups. If you liked Jesus Revolution, Erwin's earlier film, you'll probably feel the same way about this one. The best way to judge it for your own family is to watch the trailer first (link below).
Five questions to talk about afterwards
Young Washington works well for a home group or youth night because the film raises good questions. Our church movie night guide covers the practical side. Pause after the film and ask:
1. Washington's first big mission ends in a surrender he signs without fully understanding it. When has a failure shaped you more than a success? 2. His mother tells him he's protected for a purpose. What's the difference between trusting God's providence and assuming God will keep us from all harm? 3. Washington's July 1755 letter credits Providence and also admits the army was "most scandalously beaten". Why can both statements be true? 4. The film invents some conversations. How should we watch "based on a true story" films, and where can we check the history? 5. Washington lived through the Monongahela while the men around him didn't. How do you think surviving that should change how a person lives?
If you liked Young Washington
