Where to Watch David (2025): Netflix, Angel and Age Guide
David, the animated Angel Studios musical rated PG, streams on Netflix and Angel but has no free legal option. Where to watch it, parent guidance on scary scenes, and how closely it follows 1 Samuel.

David is streaming on Netflix and Angel, but there is no free legal way to watch it. The animated Angel Studios musical (rated PG) came out in theaters on December 19, 2025. It reached Angel on January 27, 2026 and Netflix US on June 3, 2026. As of October 27, 2026, the streaming-guide site JustWatch lists it on Netflix (including the cheaper plan with ads) and Angel, with digital rental or purchase on Amazon, Apple TV and Fandango At Home. It lists no free option.
Below you'll find where to watch it, what parents should know before pressing play, and how closely the story follows 1 Samuel. We checked availability on October 27 and 28, 2026. Streaming catalogs change, so confirm in your own app before you plan a family night around it.
Where to watch David right now
- Netflix (US): added on June 3, 2026, according to What's on Netflix. Wikipedia reports) it was Netflix's top film in the US by June 5. Netflix said other regions would get it in a staggered rollout through June and later, so outside the US check your local catalog.
- Angel: streaming on angel.com and the Angel app since January 27, 2026, as Angel announced. Before the Netflix deal, What's on Netflix noted the film was limited to paying Angel Guild members.
- Rent or buy: JustWatch shows digital purchase on Amazon Video, Apple TV and Fandango At Home, plus DVD and Blu-ray. Prices change often, so look at the price in the store before you buy.
If you already have Netflix, that's your simplest option.
Can you watch David for free legally?
Not at the moment. JustWatch lists no free or ad-supported option for the film in the US. Avoid YouTube uploads that claim to be the "full movie": Angel's official channel carries the trailers, and a complete upload from any other channel is pirated. What the film is about
David was directed by Brent Dawes and Phil Cunningham of Sunrise Animation Studios and follows their earlier Young David series. It runs about 110 to 115 minutes, depending on the source you check. Phil Wickham, the worship artist, voices the adult David and Brandon Engman voices him as a boy. Lauren Daigle voices Rebecca and Asim Chaudhry plays the Philistine king Achish.
The story starts when the prophet Samuel anoints a young shepherd, moves through the fight with Goliath, then spends most of its time on David's years on the run from King Saul. Wikipedia's plot summary says it ends with the Israelites recognizing David as their king. The songs are worship-style numbers, including "Follow the Light", which Angel also released as its own video.
The film was a hit. What's on Netflix reports a $22 million opening weekend, the biggest ever for a faith-based animated film, and about $87.5 million domestic. Wikipedia puts the worldwide total at about $91 million.
Is David OK for kids?
The MPA rated it PG for action, violence and some scary images, as Parent Previews notes. Three family review sites give a consistent picture:
- Common Sense Media rates it for ages 6 and up. It describes thematic peril and non-graphic violence in several battle scenes, very mild language ("heck" and "wretched") and no sexual content or drugs. Its parent reviews say some children found the scary characters and intensity too much.
- Plugged In rates the content as light for every age group. Its review says most of the graphic moments from David's story are only hinted at. Goliath falls to a stone, but the later beheading is skipped.
- Parent Previews gives violence a B- and every other category an A.
The scenes most likely to frighten younger children are the Amalekites, who wear deer skulls as masks and strike from the shadows, and the moment David is captured and about to be executed. Under 6 is probably too early. Many families will find 7 and up comfortable, but if your child is sensitive to scary villains, watch the Amalekite scenes first or sit together for them.
How close is it to the Bible?
If you're asking because you plan to use the film with a Sunday school class or home group, here is what reviewers found. Plugged In says the film follows 1 Samuel for most of its run, starting with Samuel's visit to Jesse's house and ending just after Saul's death, which is not shown. It also notes that some events are skipped, apparently to keep the PG rating. The film doesn't introduce David's wives, the slaughter of the priests at Nob is only hinted at, and David is portrayed more as a diplomat than a warrior.
Two episodes are changed. In the Bible (1 Samuel 27 to 30), David takes refuge with the Philistines and is given the town of Ziklag. In the film, he and his men find Ziklag abandoned. Later, when the Amalekites raid Ziklag, the film shows David walking alone into their camp and being captured, where Scripture says David pursued them with his men. Parent Previews adds that the film takes liberties with the text and gives David a modern, gentle-teenager feel, with pop-style worship songs. It still calls the film one of the best family-friendly Bible films the reviewer has seen.
The cave scene is the high point for faith. David has the chance to kill Saul, cuts only a corner of his robe and spares him, as in 1 Samuel 24. It's a clear picture of mercy, and it's the film's best moment for discussion. To read the real thing, open 1 Samuel 16 to 31 with your children after the film. Five questions to talk about after the film
1. In 1 Samuel 16:7, God tells Samuel that people look at outward appearance but the Lord looks at the heart. When have you judged someone by how they looked or what they did for a living? 2. David has a chance to take the throne by force and doesn't. What would it take for you to show mercy to someone who is chasing you? 3. In the film, Saul says that as the anointed king his plans are God's will. How can we tell the difference between wanting something and God leading us? 4. David sings that he isn't afraid, even when he is captured. What does it look like for a child, not just a hero, to trust God when something scary happens? 5. The film changes some details of 1 Samuel. What's the best way to enjoy a retelling and still go back to the Bible for the full story?

If your family liked David
- [The Prince of Egypt](/movie/the-prince-of-egypt/): the classic animated Moses story that reviewers often compare David to. It has a few intense scenes, so it suits similar ages.
- [Joseph: King of Dreams](/movie/joseph-king-of-dreams/): an animated musical about Joseph and his brothers, with a gentler tone for younger children.
- [The Star](/movie/the-star/): a lighter animated Nativity story told through a donkey, a good one to save for Advent.
